The messenger bag; a staple of students, commuters, and fashion-lovers alike.
It’s the ultimate carry-all, combining practicality with a distinctly laid-back look. But how did this everyday essential become a global icon of style?
To truly appreciate the enduring appeal of the messenger bag, we need to look at its journey from a tool of the trade to a fashion statement.
In this guide, we’ll tell the story of how the messenger bag went from humble beginnings to becoming one of Gola’s core fashion staples.
The history of the messenger bag is rooted in function, not fashion.
Its origins can be traced back to the 19th and early 20th centuries, where it was the trusted companion of postmen, utility linemen, and military couriers. The design was born out of necessity: a durable, single-strap bag worn across the body, leaving the hands free for carrying tools, maps, or dispatches. Its large flap provided quick, easy access to contents while on the move, a feature that remains central to its design today.
The cultural shift of messenger bags began in the mid-20th century. Adopted by bicycle couriers in bustling urban centres, the messenger bag became synonymous with speed, efficiency, and a certain gritty, rebellious spirit.
By the 1990s, this look had broken into the mainstream, evolving from a practical necessity to a must-have accessory for students, creative professionals, and anyone seeking a bag that was less formal than a briefcase, but more stylish than a backpack.
Gola enters the bag market
From the birth of the Gola brand in 1905, the focus was on footwear.
With a rich history steeped in sport and speed, by the 1960s and ‘70s, Gola had become a dominant force in British sportswear, with our iconic trainers seen on athletes and fans alike. With this rapid expansion, moving into accessories was a natural progression.
During this golden era, the Gola messenger bag was born.
In 1972, Gola launched a collection of sportswear and accessories that perfectly captured the mood of the time.
The bags, with their bold branding, clean lines, and vintage flair, quickly became a must-have accessory for all. They were more than just a way to carry your belongings; they were a symbol of athletic cool and British style.
The Gola Redford Messenger Bag: A Timeless Icon
Whilst a variety of messenger bags have been adopted into our collections over the years, there was one design that rose above the rest as a Gola icon and an enduring classic: the Redford messenger bag.
Launched in 1974, the Redford became an instant success. Taking styling cues from the Northern Soul and Mod movements of the era, the Redford combines a smart, structured silhouette with a sporty edge. The bag’s standout features, the striking contrast piping, the prominent Gola logo, and its practical size made it a favourite among students and the style-conscious who wanted to carry their essentials without compromising their style.
Today, our Redford messenger bag remains a cornerstone of the Gola Classics collection. With its timeless design and unisex appeal, the Redford is just as relevant now as it was 50 years ago.
While new colourways and materials keep it feeling fresh, the modern Redford bag retains the look and feel of the original, proving that true style never goes out of fashion.
From its humble beginnings as a practical tool to its current status as a fashion icon, the messenger bag has a rich history combining fashion and functionality.
Gola’s messenger bags are timeless accessories with a unique heritage that has stood the test of time. The icon of the collection, the Gola Redford messenger bag, isn’t just a piece of fashion history; it’s a testament to the power of classic design. It’s the perfect blend of form and function—a bag you’ll want to carry not just for its practicality, but for its iconic fashion status.

The current resurgence of heritage fashion is undeniable.
Whilst many brands may be adapting their collections to suit the growing trend, Gola is one of the true pioneers of retro fashion. With 120 years of rich history and designs to call upon, it’s no wonder that the Gola brand is surging in popularity.
Before retro was a buzzword, Gola created iconic trainer designs influenced by its technical footwear knowledge and sporting expertise.
Although no longer the first brand you would call upon for your track and field exploits, the style influences from these heritage designs remain a key part of the Gola collection today.
Gola presents five heritage trainers from their sporting origins, ideal for embracing retro fashion or terrace wear trends. Here are the stories behind some of Gola’s heritage styles so you can add authentic retro-style trainers to your wardrobe.
Gola’s most iconic, well-known trainer, the Harrier, has been a staple of the Gola brand since 1968.
The first Harrier trainer was designed by Fred Dilley, crafted from white leather and featured a green suede cap and wingflash on its side. Created with sport in mind, the Harrier was originally designed for training and sports, including volleyball, badminton and squash. It quickly became a favourite throughout the late ‘60s and early ‘70s.
When retro fashion came back in style in the early ‘00s, Gola relaunched the Harrier, which quickly became a roaring success. Loved by those searching for men’s heritage trainers, it became the trainer of choice for men, from the terraces to the stage, when it was adorned by music icons including Paul Weller, Robbie Williams and the Gallagher brothers.
Versatile and timeless, the Harrier has spanned five decades and has been reimagined in over 500 different colourways. Gola’s flagship style, the Harrier remains a firm favourite today, embraced by nostalgic dressers, lovers of vintage fashion, terrace wear enthusiasts and trend-following fans alike.
The latest spring/summer 2025 men’s Harrier styles feature the same classic silhouette you’ve come to know and love, reimagined in bright and bold colourways, so whether you’re looking for a statement wingflash or something to set you apart on the terraces, the Harrier is the ideal choice.
First added to the Gola range during the 1970s, Gola’s Elan trainers remain a firm favourite today, selling out as quickly as they come in stock!
Offering a retro running shoe aesthetic, it was first introduced to the Gola collection as a multi-purpose training shoe and retains its old-school gum sole, harking back to its roots.
With a similar silhouette as the Harrier, Elan has a distinctive additional heel tab panel; an opportunity to add in a fashionable colour pop!
When the Elan was reintroduced to Gola’s collection in 2023, it was met with instant success. Elan remains a true standout style of the Gola collection, even becoming the style of choice for the Gola 120 Years collection.
Reimagined in stunning brights for spring/summer ‘25, shop Elan trainers in women’s, men’s and kids’ sizes at Gola and embrace the new season in retro-inspired style!
Sweeping onto the trainer scene like a whirlwind, the Gola Tornado, available for men and women, is everything you could ever want in a classic terrace wear trainer.
Taking style notes from its 1985 ancestor, this track and field-inspired design is available in a selection of bright styles for the new season, alongside neutral classics created for pairing with all your everyday wardrobe staples.
With a slight wedge gum sole reminiscent of school-gym attire, the Tornado is crafted from a heavy weave nylon upper and finished with stylish suede detailing.
Whether you’re shouting from the terraces or embracing retro-inspired terrace dressing, the Tornado is a fashion force to be reckoned with.
If you’re searching for timeless and versatile retro-trainers, look no further. The vintage-inspired Gola Viper is the ideal choice for purveyors of classic style.
The Viper is a perfectly proportioned heritage trainer rooted in 1970s sports shoe design, available in both men’s and women’s sizes.
Featuring minimalist lines and an on-trend gum sole, the Viper offers many dressing options. Pair yours with track pants to fully embrace retro-inspired dressing, or pair with wide-legged jeans for a modern twist on a vintage classic.
Available in suede and leather designs and classic and contemporary colour palettes, find your perfect pair and curate a desirable heritage style.
A plimsoll design straight out of Gola’s archives, the Badminton brings a 1970s-inspired aesthetic to modern-day dressing. A re-release of a 1970s original, the Gola Badminton was originally designed for indoor court sport. While it’s been adapted to have a fashion focus, the style retains its flexible outsole and key elements of the original design.
This canvas classic is the ideal spring/summer choice and comes in a range of colours, from court-inspired white to classic black for both men and women. Each pair features the classic Gola wingflash in a range of colours, and this season, the style has even been reimagined with metallic detailing for a chic twist!
Embrace retro court shoe style by choosing Gola Badminton today!

A significant subculture in British fashion history, terrace wear is a fashion movement that saw British football fans embrace European fashion, bringing designer style to football grounds nationwide.
In this blog, we’re highlighting the history, style and impact of terrace fashion, its retro-inspired resurgence and why Gola is the go-to brand for those wanting to elevate their terrace wear game in 2025.
What is terrace wear? The origins of terrace style
Terrace wear or terrace fashion describes the fashion worn by football fans in football grounds or stadiums while cheering on their teams. Once solely associated with football and football fan fashion inside and outside the stadiums, today, these style references are experiencing a renaissance away from football.
Here’s a brief potted history of how it all began:
Terracewear: 1970s – 1990s
In the 1970s and ’80s, football in Liverpool and Manchester was thriving, and so were the first iterations of the terrace or ‘casual’ fashion. In Manchester, it was the Fred Perry-clad ‘Perry boys’, whereas in Liverpool, it was inspired by the stylish dressing of European football fans the Merseyside supporters had seen whilst following Liverpool in the European Cup.
Although towards the end of the ’80s, casual fashion dwindled, in the ’90s, it experienced a resurgence. The rise of Britpop and ‘lad culture’ magnified the casual style and made it fashionable once again.
But how did Gola become a key terracewear player?
Gola: A staple of terrace wear style
Gola has always been deeply rooted in British sportswear.
From the early 1900s, its focus was football boots, and after the war effort, this focus quickly returned.
During the 1960s and ’70s, Gola was a leading innovative sporting brand, kitting out top-performing football teams, creating footwear for athletes and sponsoring players. So, whilst casual fashion fans were looking towards Europe to find their fashion brands, Gola boots were a popular choice on the football pitches, adorning the feet of the footballing heroes these fans were following around Europe.
These two decades would also see Gola develop the first iterations of what would go on to become two iconic terrace fashion trainer staples. The Harrier, designed by Fred Dilley in 1968, and the Elan in 1973, were originally designed as training shoes and were met with instant success, but we’ll come back to those later.
Not thought of at the time as a terrace brand, during the 1970s, Gola was a sporting champion, beginning its expansion into sportswear and accessories and rapidly becoming a household name.
Gola in the 1980s
Gola continued its sporting prowess throughout the eighties, going on to sponsor fictional comic book footballing hero Roy Race, a.k.a Roy Of The Rovers, signing a deal with the Conference League and creating one of its most successful campaigns, ‘Put Wings On Your Feet’, referring to the iconic Gola wingflash.
Although towards the end of the ’80s, the brand’s success began to dwindle, the ’90s helped put Gola back into the limelight and solidify it as a staple of terracewear style.
Britpop, nostalgia and the Gallagher brothers
In the mid-1990s, Gola was acquired by the Jacobson Group and relaunched as a heritage brand, and the timing couldn’t have been better.
As Britpop and lad culture rose, the Gola Classics collection was launched. Iconic trainers such as the Harrier were reimagined, and leading icons of the Britpop era, such as Noel and Liam Gallagher and Paul Weller, couldn’t wait to have them on their feet. Gola became a terracewear staple, sliding seamlessly into the 1990s iteration of the casual aesthetic when retro football fashion was booming. Gola terrace trainers were here to stay.
From stadiums to streetwear: Why terrace fashion is still relevant today
In 2025, terrace fashion remains a true style reference.
Evolving beyond the football stadiums, social media trends marked a resurgence in football-inspired fashion and retro designs. As luxury brands continue to create designs that lean towards a growing desire for streetwear, it seems fitting that terrace fashion is returning.
Terrace fashion evokes memories of a nostalgic time for those who were part of it, whether during the heady days of the European football-following eighties, the lad culture and Britpop-influenced nineties, or the nostalgia retro-fashion loving noughties.
Fashion is cyclical, so it’s no wonder this tasteful trend is on everyone’s minds in 2025, particularly as many Britpop bands are reforming. Everyone is gearing up for the festival season, and what better way to dress for it than with a terrace-fashion classic on your feet?
These retro sportswear designs have a classic and wearable appeal that lasts, and thanks to Gola’s rich history and 120 years of experience as a heritage sporting brand, it is a key figure in the terrace wear evolution this time.
Gola’s Spring/Summer ’25 collection calls on its heritage designs, reimagining them in a rich colour palette that subtly nods toward terrace wear nostalgia. From the iconic Harrier to the eye-catching Elan, Gola calls upon its knowledge and experience to create classic and authentic terrace wear trainers with a modern twist, perfect for every terrace wear lover.

To highlight this exceptional milestone, we’re looking back on some of the key events in our history, and how our footwear and products have developed and evolved to help us to become and remain a British household name.
Come with us on this nostalgic journey as we celebrate 120 years!
Gola’s Legacy: Lacing up 120 years of a heritage brand
A lot can happen in 120 years, which couldn’t be truer for Gola. From producing the first iterations of innovative performance football boots to growing into a sporting icon, our rich history is one we’re extremely proud of!
Here are some of the standout moments from our history over the last 120 years;
1905 – Gola was born, and the focus was football boots.
Gola’s early football boots were made from leather and nails and helped lay the foundations of the brand. However, with the outbreak of the First World War in 1936, production halted as manufacturers focused on essential goods only.
1950s & ‘60s – Football boots and track shoes
During the 1950s, the football boots focus returned. The technical materials the boots were made from began to evolve, with the designs becoming lighter and their uppers cut lower. These new designs allowed for greater ball skill and control.
In 1965, Gola kitted out Liverpool FC for their FA Cup Final winning game against Leeds, catapulting the boots’ popularity.
Gola also branched into track shoes with designs similar to those available today. The 244 track shoe, known for its soft and lightweight kangaroo skin uppers, was worn by many pro athletes, including long-distance runner David Bedford, who set a new 10k world record in them at Crystal Palace in 1973.
Gola was known throughout this time as the ‘Great British Sport Shoes’ brand. From sponsoring players to being the first to abbreviate the words’ training shoes’ to ‘trainers’ – during this time, Gola had sport at the heart of everything it did.
It’s also important to mention that 1968 also saw the development of the first iteration of the Harrier, a training shoe that would go on to become a brand icon. Designed by Fred Dilley, it featured a white leather upper with a green ‘wingflash’ and a green suede toecap and was an instant success, seeing 6,000 pairs produced weekly during the ’60s.
1970s – Gola is a top 3 sports brand
Undergoing rapid expansion, exporting to 67 countries, and in 1966, with World Cup Winning England manager Alf Ramsey sitting on the board as a consultant and brand ambassador, it’s clear to see why Gola accrued so much success as a sporting champion throughout the ’70s.
Besides kitting out Manchester United, more sporting collaborations also helped solidify our brand as a sporting hero.
Expansion into sportswear and accessories also meant that Gola was becoming a household name, with Gola bags becoming a popular choice for school children and physios alike.
The ’70s (1971) also saw the launch of the first Elan track shoe, a pioneer, later developed into one of Gola’s most iconic trainer designs.
1980s – Gola gained its wings
Sponsoring comic book hero Roy Race, of Roy Of The Rovers fame and creating a kit for his fictional team, the Melchester Rovers, and signing a deal with the Conference League (which later became known as the Gola League), were some of the ways which Gola continued to ride the crest of our sporting success in the ’80s.
The 1985 ad campaign ‘Put Wings on Your Feet’ was also a key factor in the development of our brand. Referring to trainers featuring the ‘wingflash’ design, little did we know that this campaign would be so synonymous with the brand today and a prominent feature of most modern-day Gola trainers.
1990s: New beginnings and rock and roll stars
The ’90s saw new beginnings for Gola. After dwindling successes towards the end of the ’80s, in the mid-nineties, Gola was acquired by Jacobson Group.
With a focus on celebrating its rich history and heritage, Gola was relaunched as a stylish heritage footwear brand. By the decade’s end, Gola once again was experiencing roaring success.
The launch of the Gola Classics collection and the return of the iconic Harrier trainer, when retro fashion was resurgent, saw superstars of the time desperate to get their hands on Gola footwear and apparel.
Noel Gallagher contacted Gola requesting Harrier trainers for himself and ‘our kid’; Paul Weller and Robbie Williams were often seen wearing Gola on stage. Even British film star Jude Law was a fan!
Football clubs and sports stars still played a big part in the brand’s success, with Gola regularly occupying ad space at many football grounds nationwide.
2000s – Gola Classics and a centenary celebration
The turn of the new millennium saw the creation of the Gola Classics line, drawing on our rich heritage, but with a fashionable twist! The launch of Gola’s first website in 2001 created a touch-point for Gola fans.
With all this newfound success, Gola solidified its status as an iconic heritage brand. Celebrating its centenary in 2005 with limited edition trainers, bags and unique accessories, it’s clear that Gola was here to stay!
2010s to today – Gola celebrates a new era – from football star to fashion icon
With a fashion focus, Gola continued to thrive.
The ‘Made In England’ collection saw some trainer manufacturing return to the UK.
In 2018, Harrier turned 50 and a special limited edition style was launched to celebrate the occasion. Then, in 2023, Elan was relaunched. Another true Gola icon, its return was met with much enthusiasm, seeing it go on to become one of Gola’s standout styles.
Expanding its distribution worldwide, branching out into apparel, and introducing both Vegan and Recycled Materials into the collections in line with its ethical and sustainability efforts, Gola continues to shine as a heritage brand that’s not afraid to innovate.
Celebrating 120 years in 2025, who knows what the future holds for Gola? One thing’s for sure: it certainly looks bright!
Sole Trader: Why is Gola so iconic?
Gola has always been an innovator. Since the inception of those first performance football boots in the early 1900s, our ability to innovate has helped us stay at the forefront of sporting success.
Adapting sporting designs, sponsoring players and athletes and inviting them to collaborate on brand ideas has helped us to develop a real understanding of all things sport. Whether kitting out the feet of World Record-breaking track stars or being the marketing geniuses behind the Roy Of The Rovers campaign, these innovative decisions have solidified Gola as a household name.
Our ability to pivot has also helped to solidify its success. Switching from a football to fashion focus during the nostalgic wave of Britpop in the late ’90s saw global superstars (and their fans) all adopt Gola as their trainer of choice.
With a love of nostalgia and traditional terrace fashion making waves in 2025, Gola is again front and centre of this movement.

Running is a relatively accessible and affordable sport, but investing in a good pair of running shoes to minimise impact and protect your body from injuries is important.
With so much information out there, it can be difficult to know what to look for when searching for the best running shoes for beginners. Finding your perfect shoe can be tricky, from having a gait analysis to choosing the correct shoes for your preferred terrain.
In this guide, we’ve pulled together our top tips on choosing the perfect running shoes for beginners that are best suited to your running style, alongside recommending our top Gola running shoe styles to help you choose your perfect pair.
Every runner is different, so the best running shoes for you as a beginner are those that complement your natural running style and gait (more on what this is later), protecting you from injury.
When we run, an impact of the force of up to three times our body weight can travel up through the foot and lower leg, so it’s important to choose a supportive and well-cushioned running shoe that limits stress and strain on joints and muscles.
Opting for running shoes with a cushioned midsole or shock absorbing properties can help to reduce impact, absorb shock and reduce the risk of injury as a result.
How to choose running shoes for beginners
The best place to start when choosing running shoes is to find a pair that suits your natural running gait. But to know what suits it, let’s start by explaining what gait is.
What is your running gait?
Running gait, or running form, is simply the mechanical process of how your leg travels during one step. Improving your running gait will improve your efficiency and decrease your risk of injury.
An easy way to support your natural running gait is to choose trainers that work with it rather than against it, and the best way to do that is to have your gait analysed by a specialist.
What is a running gait analysis?
Running gait is determined by the extent to which you pronate.
Pronation is a word used to describe your body’s natural inward rolling of your foot every time you walk or run. It’s the body’s natural way of absorbing shock, and because of our individual biomechanics, everyone naturally lands differently.
You can have your running gait analysed for free in most local running stores, where you will be asked to run on a treadmill for around 30 seconds while a running shoe specialist records and analyses your running gait. They will recommend the type of running shoe that best suits your gait, which is typically categorised into one of three:
Neutral – a neutral runner will pronate in a biomechanically correct way. Generally, the best shoes for these runners are neutral to complement their natural gait or cushioned to minimise impact.
Overpronators – if you overpronate, your arch will collapse and roll inwards excessively every time you take a step. This is quite common in runners, and shoes that help support the inside of the foot and arch are the best choice to guide the foot into a more efficient position.
Underpronators – an underpronator, also known as a supinator, will sit more on the outside of the foot through the gait cycle whilst the foot rolls inwards to a sufficient degree. Neutral cushioned shoes are the best option here to help absorb impact.
If you’re unable to get your gait analysed professionally, the wet footprint test can also help you to understand your running gait.
To do this, step into water and then onto a piece of paper, leaving a footprint. Study your footprint, paying special attention to the arch to better understand your running gait. You’re looking out for the following signs:
Neutral runners will have a normal arch.
Overpronators will have a low or flat arch
Underpronators will have a high, rigid arch
Once you understand the type of gait you have, it will be much easier to find your perfect pair of running trainers.
Mileage and terrain
If you’re a beginner runner, you’ll also want to consider the terrain you’re most likely to run on and the miles you aim to do per week when choosing your shoes.
For example, if you love pounding the pavements, you’ll want a cushioned shoe to withstand the miles you plan on running as you build up your mileage. However, that same pair of shoes will probably be useless if you head to the trails, as they won’t offer the grip required to keep you on your feet!
If you can only invest in one pair, choose a pair best suited for the type of running you plan to do the most to prevent wearability and durability issues further down the line.

Prepare to put your best foot forward this season!
If you’re wondering how to style trainers for your daytime looks , choose clean and classic outfits and tuck in your T-shirt for ultimate style points. Here are our favourite go to looks;
How to style trainers with jeans
If you’re a fan of minimalistic styling, jeans and a fitted plain white T-shirt are the perfect outfit to pair with your neutral trainers.
White trainers are a style staple, pairing perfectly with the T-shirt for a fresh look that works every time, whatever the season.
Do you want to add a pop of colour? Switch out your white T-shirt for a colourful option, pairing the shade with the Wingflash on your Gola trainers. It’s a great way to draw attention to your otherwise neutral trainers and balance out your look.
If you’re more of a dress wearer, then a floaty floral dress is a great look for pairing with neutral trainers. Be daring with your print choice and opt for bold, bright colours; your neutral trainers will balance out the look.
Alternatively, pair a little black fitted dress with white trainers for a stylish monochrome look.
How to nail the athleisure look
Finally, if comfort is on your mind, an athleisure look could be the perfect pairing to your neutral trainers. Lean into the sporty element of your trainers, pairing yours with leggings and a stylish cropped hoodie. Our Gola Performance Women’s Typhoon RMD Trainers are the ideal choice for effortlessly styling this look, taking you straight from your morning jog to the coffee shop for post-run refreshments.
Styling neutral trainers as workwear
In recent years, office and work wear has seamlessly switched from formal business dress to classic smart casual wear, and neutral trainers are the perfect style pick to accompany the look. Due to their subtle and stylish look, neutral trainers look just as put-together as formal shoes but make the commute much more comfortable and enjoyable and make it easier to spend multiple hours on your feet. Here’s how we recommend styling neutral trainers with your workwear outfits:
Slim trousers and a tailored blazer are a classic workwear look, so swap your heels for neutral trainers, such as our Gola Classics Women’s Elan Trainers in white with stylish navy and pink detailing. We recommend pairing them with a navy or pink suit to make the accents of your trainers pop and to help breathe life into workwear.
Or, why not go for an all out colour match and pair your stylish suit with your Wingflash?
How to style trainers with a skirt
One of the hardest style pairings to pull off, putting trainers with a skirt can work, as long as you choose the correct length. Our favourite look is a classic button-down shirt with a midi skirt, finished with trainers to soften up what would be an otherwise formal outfit.
Styling neutral trainers for nights out
Gone are the days when heels were a necessity for nights out.
Nowadays, neutral trainers are just as acceptable in a fancy restaurant or cocktail bar as most other formal footwear options. However, styling your evening looks with trainers can be difficult and make your outfits appear a little too casual if not executed correctly.
Dressing up trainers for an evening out relies heavily on the right accessories to complete the look.
Here are our favourite ways to style trainers for a night on the town:
Don’t be frightened to choose a glamorous dress, using your trainers to balance out the ensemble. A slip or bodycon dress and a leather jacket with trainers is perfect for an edgy yet feminine look. Trainers with metallic highlights like our Gola Classics Women’s Falcon Mirror Trainers are a great choice for helping you to tie this look together.
Jeans that you would ordinarily wear with ankle boots and a more glam top can also look great teamed with neutral trainers when you hit the town.
Complete the look with statement accessories, such as bold jewellery or your favourite arm candy.
Styling popular women’s neutral trainer styles
If you’ve already decided that neutral trainers will be your new stylish go-to for every occasion, the next thing to decide is the style of trainers to choose and, most importantly, how to style them. Although you aren’t restricted to choosing just one style, we thought we’d share some helpful tips to help you style each.
How to style white trainers
Gola Classic Women’s Grandslam Leather Trainers
White trainers are timeless, pairing well with almost every look; making them the perfect core wardrobe staple you will be wearing season after season.
Top Tip: If you opt for white trainers, keep them clean. Wipe them down after every wear to keep them looking pristine.
Much like white trainers, black trainers such as our Gola Classics Women’s Viper Trainers in black and white are incredibly versatile. For a super sleek and stylish finish, pair yours with black jeans and a black leather jacket for instant style points. Black also pairs well with white for a chic, monochrome effect.
If an all-black outfit feels too serious, add a bright sweater or T-shirt to create a contrasting colour pop!
Beige or ecru trainers are a stylish alternative to classic white or black trainers and pair really well with colours such as pink, turquoise, green and rich autumnal shades such as burnt orange and khaki. If you love a warm colour palette, then beige trainers could be the perfect choice for you! Worried about styling them with your everyday basics? Don’t fret; ecru trainers look amazing when paired with blue denim!
How to style high-top trainers
Although you might not think it, high-top trainers are incredibly versatile and can be paired successfully with as many looks as low-tops. Looking particularly good with shorts and skirts in the summer, one of our favourite ways to style high-top trainers is with a trouser suit, putting a contemporary spin on a classic look for the office. Our Gola Women’s Coaster High Trainers are essential for those who want many versatile dressing options from their trainers.
Neutral trainers are the epitome of style. Whether you’re looking for shoes to pair with daytime looks or for an evening, neutral trainers can be effortlessly paired with many outfits in your wardrobe! With these neutral trainer styling tips, you’ll put your best foot forward whatever the occasion.

With searches on Pinterest for terms such as ‘badminton outfits’ (up 80%) and ‘playing badminton aesthetic’ (up 45%) becoming increasingly popular, it seems that dressing inspired by racquetball sports is here to stay.
At Gola, we’re embracing badminton core this season and our Badminton plimsoll is the perfect addition to your racquet sport-inspired wardrobe. Read on for tips on curating exceptional badminton style with our hints on dressing for the trend and why we believe our Badminton plimsolls are an exceptional choice to complete your look.
Athleisure style has continued to grow over recent years and sport-inspired clothing is becoming increasingly adopted into everyday life. If you’re a lover of a sport or sport-inspired style, embracing the dress code closely associated with your sport is a great way to feel part of a community. This season badminton style is front and centre, so read on to learn more about the aesthetic.
Badminton aesthetic is everyday dressing inspired by styles worn on the court. According to Pinterest Predicts, Gen Z and Millennials are ‘smitten’ with everything badminton, so it’s no surprise that the fashion is filtering into everyday style.
Whilst 2023 saw an influx of Wimbledon-inspired outfits and a rise in sports such as pickleball, the beauty of badminton is that it’s cheap, accessible and can easily be played indoors during inclement British weather.
Because badminton is a simple sport to pick up and play, people of all skill sets can try it out and have fun with friends doing so. With its accessibility to all, it’s no wonder that with the rise of racquet sports, badminton has become the game of choice for fitness, fashion and fun.
Badminton outfits are becoming part of everyday fashion because dressing for the role offers a sense of belonging to the community, even when off the court. Here are our top tips if you’re wondering how to curate badminton-inspired outfits for yourself;
How to curate a badminton outfit
The badminton look can be interpreted however you like, whether you’re drawing inspiration from the professional athletes themselves, you simply want to inject a sportier aesthetic into your everyday style, or you want to channel a vintage-inspired look.
Badminton style for men
For men, badminton style is all about emulating that just stepped-off-the-court feel. Think loose-fitting, breathable T-shirts, sports shorts, white socks and badminton-inspired shoes.
If you want to curate that ‘just off the court look’, choose a bright technical T-shirt and pair it with neutral shorts, or opt for a sleeveless T-shirt for freedom of movement.
To give your look a vintage twist:
Swap out your technical T-shirt for a structured polo shirt.
Choose rich block colours to lean into that classic, vintage style.
For women, badminton style depends on your current aesthetic . If you prefer loose joggers and a fitted top, add a visor and a cute racquet bag and you’re already well on your way to a perfectly curated badminton look that’s stylish on and off the court.
For fans of vintage dressing, take inspiration from retro-inspired tennis dresses and skirts that bridge the gap between the two sports. Pleated skirts are the best option to perfect that Badminton aesthetic. Or, if a tennis skirt isn’t for you, opt for a skort or some stylish shorts.
Sleeveless polo shirts in deep, primary colours help to complete the look, or if you’re feeling brave, opt for tennis, or in this case, badminton whites.
For classic badminton style, our Badminton plimsoll trainer is the perfect choice.
At the height of Gola’s sporting success in the ’70s, the Badminton plimsoll, created for the sport, was a firm favourite. Reimagined with a more fashion-forward focus, the style was reintroduced in 2019. This footwear icon still shares the ’70s style’s silhouette, remaining true to its roots.
Made with a lightweight, flexible gum sole, the Badminton plimsoll trainer oozes retro style and captures the badminton aesthetic beautifully, whether you’re a vintage enthusiast or someone who likes their style with a sporty twist. With a quirky toe guard, it has a distinctive look and oozes heritage charm.
This popular shoe is perfect for everyday dressing, is available for men and women and will sit perfectly in any wardrobe inspired by badminton or other racquet sports.
